Cleansing and skin ageing

A major cause of various skin problems today is exaggerated use of soaps and cleansing products. Soaps and cleansers will not only dissolve impurities and make-up on the skin surface, they will also dissolve protective oils, salts and antioxidants in the skin. This harmful effect on the skin and its protective barrier can give rise to various skin problems such as dry skin and irritation. It will also speed up skin ageing processes

Skincare consumers are usually eager to find products with “active” ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamins, special lipids and oils to combat signs of ageing. But more important is not to dissolve and wash away these substances in the first place.

If possible, warm water only is often enough. Warm water will dissolve both water soluble and fat soluble impurities. It will also have a slight harmful effect on the skin barrier so it will be necessary to replace the loss of natural lipids, preferably with a lamellar cream that can build up the skin’s protection.

However, pollution and use of make-up will make in necessary to use some kind of cleansing product. It is important to use a cleansing product that is as mild and gentle as possible, but still does the job.

We have therefore developed a very mild cleansing product, Everyday Soft Foaming Cleanser (soon available in stores and online). Foaming products are usually harsher to the skin than i.e. cleansing milks. However, we have used a new technology where an extra amount of protective organic oils and ceramides have been incorporated into the product. The oils will not only protect the skin but will also dissolve fat soluble impurities, without disturbing the skin barrier.

Whatever your choice of cleanser, our advice is that you choose a routine that is as gentle as possible to the skin but still does the job. And that you repair the damage with a lamellar cream.
